Canonical URL is a way through which we can tell the main URL of accessing a blog post on our blog/website. Because of Canonical URL we can keep the other urls pointing to the same web page. Through this we can save our website from penalty by Google.

The rel=canonical element also known as canonical link, is an HTML element that helps a website owner in fixing the duplicate content issues. When we use it in a good manner it also helps us in increasing the SEO ranking of a website.

The concept is simple : if you have a different versions of web pages containing the same content. You just have to pick the main page that you want to rank on Google, and add that HTML element to that URL.
